This support service was
launched on World Aids Day 1999 and is aimed at
those who are living with HIV and those around
them, such as partners, family and carers. This
service works in a confidential, safe and
friendly manner, with access to our HIV
reference library, free Positive Nation and +ve
magazines, along with all of our general
resources including free access to HIV/AIDS
sites on the Internet.
In April 2001 this service
changed its name to POSITIVE LIVING. Below is an
extract from our press release to explain why.
"GADD has changed the
name of its positive HIV Support Group to
POSITIVE LIVING. This is to reflect the current
improvements in the treatment if HIV that
enables people to live longer, healthier and
fuller lives. At the same time, we are
continuing with our HIV prevention work, as
there is still no cure for HIV/AIDS. We also
recognise that the improvements in treatment
could still fail in the long run and therefore
we must not abandon our commitment to care, but
adapt it to changing circumstances. Furthermore,
GAD restates it's determination to face the
challenges of HIV/AIDS by fighting ignorance,
prejudice and fear through promoting tolerance,
hope and compassion."
As from
July 2007 GAD is starting up a monthly CLOSED
Drop-in for people living with HIV/AIDS. If
you are a positive person and wish to come to
this group then please phone 01325 252522 and
ask for Michael Milner who will give you
information, venue, date and time of this
positive people only drop-in.
The
purpose of this drop-in is to act as a self-help
group; to ascertain the views of positive people
and ensure they are heard by policy makers and
service providers; to operate a social support
network that enables people to broaden their
circle of friends in a safe environment
without prejudice, discrimination or stigma.
If you wish to access this
service then please phone our admin line 01325
252522 and ask to speak to Barry Birch,
Community Development Manager or Mike
Milner
